What is Adobe Acrobat?
Adobe Acrobat is the best-known software for working with PDFs. It comes in two flavors: the free Acrobat Reader for viewing, printing, commenting on and signing PDFs, and the paid Acrobat Standard and Acrobat Pro for editing, converting, combining and protecting them.
Knowing which one you need saves time and money. This guide explains the difference, the official way to install each, what your computer needs and how to fix the PDF problems people call about most.
What you can do with Acrobat
- Opening, printing and commenting on PDF files
- Filling in forms and adding electronic signatures
- Editing text and images inside a PDF
- Converting PDFs to and from Word, Excel and PowerPoint
- Combining files, OCR on scans and password protection
Can you download Acrobat for free?
Partly, yes. Adobe Acrobat Reader is free from Adobe and handles viewing, printing, commenting, and filling in and signing forms.
Editing text and images, converting to Word or Excel, combining files and OCR need Acrobat Standard or Acrobat Pro. Those are paid plans, and Adobe usually offers a free trial.
Download Acrobat Reader only from Adobe. Fake “PDF reader” downloads are a common way to deliver adware and malware.
Acrobat free download: install it step by step
The whole process usually takes 15 to 30 minutes, most of it waiting for the download.
Decide between Reader and Acrobat Pro
If you only need to open, print, comment on or sign PDFs, the free Acrobat Reader is enough. If you need to edit, convert or combine PDFs, you need Acrobat Standard or Pro.
Go to Adobe's official Acrobat page
Get Acrobat Reader or start an Acrobat Pro plan or trial on adobe.com. Uncheck any optional offers you don't want during download.
Sign in with your Adobe account
For Acrobat Standard or Pro, sign in with the Adobe account that holds your plan, so the paid tools unlock. Reader works without an account for basic use.
Run the installer
Open the downloaded installer and follow the prompts. On Windows, approve the permission request. On a Mac, open the downloaded package and drag or install as instructed.
Make Acrobat your default PDF app
On Windows go to Settings → Apps → Default apps. On a Mac, select any PDF, choose Get Info → Open with → Acrobat, then Change All.
Open a PDF and confirm your tools
Open a PDF and check the tools panel. If editing tools are locked, you are signed in with an account that doesn't include Standard or Pro.

This takes you to Acrobat on Adobe’s official site, where the download starts.
Download Acrobat for Windows PC or Mac
The steps above are the same on both systems. These are the details that differ.
Acrobat for Windows 10 & 11 (PC)
- Adobe’s installer for Windows is a small .exe file. Run it and approve the User Account Control prompt so it can install.
- Acrobat needs 64-bit Windows 10 or Windows 11. Check yours under Settings → System → About.
- On PCs with ARM processors (such as Snapdragon), check Adobe’s list of apps that support Windows on ARM before you buy.
- If Microsoft Defender SmartScreen warns about an “Adobe” installer, stop. Real Adobe installers are digitally signed by Adobe Inc.: right-click the file and check Properties → Digital Signatures.
Acrobat for Mac (Apple silicon & Intel)
- On a Mac, Adobe’s installer comes as a .dmg file. Open it, double-click the installer inside and enter your Mac password when asked.
- Acrobat runs natively on Apple silicon (M-series) Macs as well as supported Intel Macs. Check yours under Apple menu → About This Mac.
- If macOS warns that it can’t verify the developer of an “Adobe” installer, delete it. Adobe’s installers are signed and notarized, so that warning means the file isn’t from Adobe.
- After installing, macOS may ask you to allow access to folders or other permissions. Approve them in System Settings → Privacy & Security.
Acrobat system requirements
Typical requirements for the current release. Adobe updates them with each version, so confirm the details on Adobe's official system requirements page before installing.

Fixing common Acrobat installation problems
PDFs open in the browser or in another app
Set Acrobat as your default PDF app. On Windows use Settings → Apps → Default apps. On a Mac, select a PDF and use Get Info → Open with → Change All.
Edit PDF or Export tools are locked
Those tools need Acrobat Standard or Pro. Make sure you're signed in (Help → Sign In, or the profile icon) with the Adobe account that holds your paid plan.
The installer fails or rolls back
Restart the computer, close any open PDFs and browser windows, and run the installer again with administrator rights. If an older Acrobat version is installed, remove it first.
Acrobat says your trial or subscription has ended
Check your plan status on your Adobe account page, then sign out of Acrobat and back in with the account that holds the active plan.

Acrobat download FAQ
Adobe Acrobat Reader is free and handles viewing, printing, commenting and signing. Editing, converting and combining PDFs require a paid Acrobat Standard or Pro plan, which usually comes with a free trial.
Reader opens and annotates PDFs. Acrobat Pro creates and changes them: it edits text and images, converts to Office formats, combines files, runs OCR on scans, redacts and protects documents.
You can comment, highlight, fill in forms and sign with Reader, but you can't change the existing text or images. That requires Acrobat Standard or Pro.
Acrobat Pro is included in Adobe's Creative Cloud all-apps plans, so you don't need a separate Acrobat subscription if you already have one of those.
No. Adobe distributes Acrobat only through adobe.com, the Creative Cloud app and the official mobile app stores. “Free full version” downloads, keygens and cracks frequently bundle malware that can steal passwords and banking details, and they leave you without security updates or support.
